If there ever was a complement to Dr Richard Smart's "Sunlight into Wine" epic work, Brinton and York's two-part article on compost preparation and use in vineyards, should take the spot - call it "Carbon into Wine". The paper, published as a major two-part series in Practical Vineyard covers the topic as vastly as it does in depth, exploring the author's "unique combined experience" from Brinton's graduate wandering in the Alsace valley vineyards of France and Germany discovering the errors of "well-intentioned but harmful vineyard MSW compost recycling in the late 70's, to the verdant hills of California where Brinton and York together examined mixed cropping and "very, very careful judicious applications of the correct compost" to bring a truly sustainable compost-based viticulture to fruition. "Its impossible to read these articles without grasping the authors' depth of experience with soils and composts in vineyard settings"- the editors.
