Contaminated Soil Composting in the Army

$20.00

Based on Woods End Laboratories project conducted for the US Army Environmental Center: bio-remediation of TNT and RDX-laced soils by means of composting. The Woods End/Roy F. Weston team were the first in America to apply large scale composting ideas to tackle the problem of degrading thousands of tons of soils still present on US Army Bases from WWII casings disposal.

This official report outlines the careful process of developing needed recipes for composting these contaminated soils by bringing in a variety of agricultural byproducts found in the region and pre-screened according to a series of parameters.

The study reports trial results of developing adiabatic composters to perform lab scale studies and goes on to test at moderate field scale before tackling the massive Umatilla, Oregon trial. The process assumes windrow (or in vessel) type composting. Physical, chemical and microbiological properties of recipes and mixes, as will as the composting process, and comparisons of oxygen utilization under varying regimes of turning and aeration, are all depicted. Produced by the staff of Woods End Lab for the US Army’s Environmental Center.
